Election Prep Meeting
Many of you probably received a ballot in your mail this week. Are you unsure what to do for June’s upcoming primary election? Join our church family in being faithful to caring for our city by being engaged in the political process. On Thursday, June 2nd, from 730-9pm we will host a time of discussing the upcoming election along with our sister church in West LA. If you are interested in joining, check out this link:
We won’t have time to cover every race, so we are going to focus on local races that are competitive, and especially focus on the track records of candidates on housing and homelessness. We will do other research, which can be included in the cheat sheets that are eventually created, but we want to focus our time on these matters for next week!
Key Housing Bills
This spring has been encouraging from a housing perspective. Three key bills have passed through their house of origin (meaning they still have to pass through the other house) all of which will move the needle significantly:
SB 679: This would increase and streamline funding for affordable housing
AB 2011: This would increase the ability to build housing (especially 100% affordable housing) in commercial corridors in the state
SB 886: this would streamline approvals of student housing (avoiding CEQA Review)

AB 2097 which would end parking minimums in California near major transit stops, is going to be up for a tough floor vote TOMORROW in the Assembly. We talked about parking minimums in our last Faith and Housing meeting; since then, I managed to get a piece published outlining why they are so harmful to the poorest Angelinos. My best prognostication is that it probably got between a 50-75% chance of passing, which means it's a really important thing to contact your state rep about this week to push it over the top!
